When it opened in 1971, the Pearl Theatre was the first in town to screen foreign films with their original soundtracks. Etched in the memories and dreams of generations of Phuketians, this cherished site was their portal to a wider, international popular culture. The theatre sat at the heart of a prominent hospitality and amusement complex, flanked by a bowling alley and a hotel that was a popular venue for nightlife and adult
entertainment. In 2013, it was reborn as a hall of attractions lined with trompe l’oeil murals. The Biennale works add another layer to this history of visual pleasure and affective labour, recalling the past lives of a precinct haunted by the gendered, working body—the hinge between sensual experience and economic value.
