Eternal [Kalpa]
29 November 2025 - 30 April 2026, Phuket
In this age of "polycrisis", a competitive and violent economic system is sapping human empathy and degrading the non-human world. Eternal [Kalpa] is a call to suspend its rational, linear time, which we find so hard to share, in favour of one that creates and enables, a time that embraces other times. The concept invokes a Hindu notion of time: one day in the life of the Creator-God, Brahma-4,320,000,000 human years-until Shiva destroyed that creation with the fire of the Kalpa. One Kalpa is the duration of Brahma's light; when that world is destroyed, darkness falls, until a new world is created at dawn.
Eternal [Kalpa] is that liquid evening moment when sun and sky, and the sea, their gigantic mirror, flood the eve with colour before yielding to the darkness. Taking cues from the natural world, diverse tempos are introduced by streams of artistic research and dialogue across many creative fields. Multisensory and polyrhythmic, the Biennale is a prompt, an invitation to dwell in this more mindful, more accommodating time.
—Arin Rungjang, David Teh, Hera Chan, Marisa Phandharakrajadej
Thailand Biennale
The itinerant Thailand Biennale was initiated to decentralise contemporary art in Thailand and engage new audiences, revitalising and reimagining provincial destinations for visitors and locals alike. After the inaugural biennale in Krabi (2018) and a second in Korat (2021), its third edition took place in Chiang Rai (2023) in the country's north. Thailand Biennale Phuket will be the fourth exhibition in the series, organised by Thailand's Office of Contemporary Art and Culture in partnership with the provincial government of Phuket.

The Biennale
About The Biennale
Activating a range of historic, post-industrial and civic venues, and Phuket’s stunning natural environments, over 50 new commissions are being shown in partnership with art institutions, government agencies and private foundations from around the world.
Timekeepers
Timekeepers are holders of knowledge who give rhythm and definition to the immense complexity of the word ‘kalpa’. The work of these cultural practitioners is represented in the Biennale exhibition or through live activations. The featured artists include Jirapat Angsumalee, Likit LaLaeng, Somchok Pramongkit, and Takahashi Yuji.
Timepieces
The Timepieces are works of contemporary art set within Phuket’s natural or built environment that amplify the rhythms of life, change, and decay. Registering traces of visitation and use, these works ‘keep time’ not as a linear accumulation, but as overlapping frequencies of past, present, and imagined futures. The Timepieces occupy sites shared by human and non-human actors, including Khao Rang Viewpoint, Promthep Cape, Saphan Hin Park and mangrove walkway, and the former public market 3 of Yi Teng Complex.
Uniforms
TOQA designed 120 uniform sets for docents, curators, management, and installation teams, forming a shared and functional visual vocabulary rooted in Phuket identities and designed for the cultural worker. Developed and workshopped between studios in Phuket and Manila, the uniforms merge Ying Batik’s 100% hand-painted techniques with TOQA’s sport-resort sensibilities.
The textiles feature a Phuket fruits motif—pineapple, mangosteen, durian, and rambutan—linking local specificity with familiar Southeast Asian food cultures, while the fisherman pants draw inspiration from the practical, sculptural folding of banana leaves, translated into a modular silhouette. You can spot our docents wearing them in exhibition venues.
