Phuket’s old shophouses were built to accommodate trade on the ground floor and family living quarters above, serving the town’s diverse community. Between “Sino-European” arches and floor tiles, merchants once weighed tin, spices, and fabric amidst a medley of languages and the scents of tea, incense, and home-cooked meals. Internal light wells—typical of shophouse architecture across the former Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca, and Singapore— helped brighten and ventilate the cool, private interiors.
