Wilawan Wiangthong (b. 1990) is an artist from Northeastern Thailand. She grew up in a border region shaped by the movement of trade and migrant labor. This influenced the development of her artistic practice, which uses fieldwork to explore the capacities of the human body.
Wilawan constructs cyborgian forms to question the roles of women in society, through gender, identity, and labor. Drawing inspiration from games, myths, fiction, and oral history, she uses her body as medium and metaphor. Her works span various formats, including performance, photography, moving images, sculpture, and installation.
Wilawan has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Thailand and internationally. Her solo exhibitions include “Mom of Alterity”, presented at both MAIELIE, Khon Kaen and MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai (2024), and “Into the Oyster Heaven” at Siao-Long Cultural Park, Tainan, Taiwan. Other notable exhibitions include “The Cowgirl” in S.O.E. 2: We Trade Everything, Khon Kaen (2023); “Crossplay” by Phifa Collective at Kultx, Khon Kaen (2022); “The Enclosed Garden Multi Sensory” with Heroines' Wave, an international female artists collective (2021); “The Blue War” series at the Day of Performance Art, Lviv School of Performance Art, Ukraine (2019), and “We Are Wearing Out Our Skin” at Jing Jai Gallery, Chiang Mai (2025).
