Saphan Hin Park
Saphan Hin is a seaside public park—a popular place for locals and visitors to exercise, relax, and watch the sunrise. The park is home to a striking monument in the form of a shell-like dredging boat sculpture, officially known as the “60th Anniversary Memorial.” Built in 1969, the statue commemorates Captain Edward Thomas Miles, an Australian who brought the first offshore tin dredger to Thailand in 1909, during the reign of King Rama V, when the tin mining industry was thriving. Saphan Hin once served as a major port for cargo and passenger ships traveling along the Andaman Sea. It is also believed to be the landing point where Phuket residents returning from China brought incense smoke (Hiew En) to perform purification rituals, a practice that evolved into Phuket’s well-known Vegetarian Festival celebrated today.
