Formerly known as Laem Kho Chao (Lord’s Neck Cape), the headland was named by local fishermen and the Moken because its shape resembled a neck stretching out into the sea. In 1982, a shrine to the Hindu god Brahma (Phra Phrom) was built there, and the cape was subsequently renamed Laem Phromthep (Cape of the Brahma God). Today, Phromthep Cape is world-renowned as one of the most beautiful sunset viewpoints and has long been one of Phuket’s most iconic landmarks. It also serves as Thailand’s official reference point for sunset time.
