Built in 1983 as a municipal meeting hall, this is a cherished example of the modern civic architecture that proliferated in Thailand in the 1970s and 1980s. Cool and airy, balancing shade and natural light, the building bears touches of the “international style”, with thoughtful affordance for the tropical climate. Newly renovated for the Biennale, it hosts two projects opening up the little-known past, and still progressive futures, of Asian modernism.
