When it opened in the late 1980s, the former Imperial 2 Hotel was the first in town to offer a lunch buffet. Most of its guests were fishing boat owners and captains; it later became a favourite of artists, singers, and beauty contestants during their time in training. The structure of the building is typical of the vernacular architecture of hospitality that mush- roomed in Thailand during the Cold War. With its cosy volumes and ground-floor massage parlour, it has since been used informally by squatters and local creative people. Now awaiting renovation and a new generation of visitors, for the Biennale, the hotel welcomes emerging artists and collectives from Thailand and around the world.
