4000-seat Municipal Gymnasium

Inaugurated in 2012, this indoor arena is the centrepiece of Phuket’s main civic sports complex in the popular Saphan Hin Park, a busy hive of the island’s public life. A few kilometres from the centre of Phuket Town, the site was once a busy port, a gateway for traders and travellers from every direction. The stadium provides public recreation facilities and hosts major tournaments for various sports. Here, the Biennale addresses Phuket’s coastal communities and maritime imaginary, while remembering the fearsome power of the sea.
